Surprise gift: Deputy Stone’s son gets a new bike

The family of Deputy Scott Stone got a big surprise Friday afternoon. You may recall he’s one of the men injured in February’s deadly shoot out at the Murray Hills Apartments.

His son was in need of a new bicycle so a Southern Colorado bike shop answered the call.

Little Carter wasn’t expecting a bike anytime soon but a community member told the Colorado Springs Bike Shop owners that Carter not only was outgrowing his old bike but that it had just recently broken.

A black and blue Matrix bike with training wheels left Deputy Scott Stone and his son Carter overwhelmed with joy.

“My kiddo, he’s been through a lot with everything going on,” said Deputy Scott Stone.

It’s a small gift donated by the Colorado Springs Bike Shop.

“We figured it was right up our alley and that’s one small thing we could do to help out. We’re very happy that we could fill that need,” said Ed Johnson.

But for the Stone family it meant so much more.

“It’s amazing, it makes me have hope to know that people out there support me [and] support my family. This bike represents a lot and his reaction seeing the bike it’s super cool. It gets me choked up,” said Deputy Scott Stone.

“It means the world to us to be able to do this, to help bring some joy through such horrendous tragedy. As a business we’ve always supported law enforcement all that we can,” said Bonnie Johnson.

Its been more than 70 days since Deputy Scott Stone was injured; leaving him in-and-out of the hospital and bound to a wheelchair.

“[I] just have a lot of issues with my hip and my left leg in general.”

But as he battles through his tough road to recovery his only request.

“Keep me in your prayers and keep law enforcement in mind. If you feel like you need to support law enforcement reach out to organizations and donate. They save lives.” said Deputy Scott Stone.

Deputy stone also told me that Carter’s new bike will be another source of motivation as he plans to take him to the park often this summer.

Deputy Scott Stone should be back in uniform within a year.
