4-year-old with cancer ‘sworn in’ as Colorado Springs police officer
Four-year-old Joshua was the newest member to take the Colorado Springs Police Department’s oath of office Tuesday before he starts a new six-month round of grueling chemotherapy.
CSPD hosted Joshua and his family Tuesday morning; Joshua was in full uniform and “sworn in” to the department as a volunteer cadet to the cheers of many officers.
Joshua was born on Dec. 23, 2013, and was diagnosed with Stage IV kidney cancer when he was only three years old. He received chemotherapy and radiation therapy and had an 11-centimeter tumor removed. He was considered officially in remission this past December.
But in January, a tumor was discovered in one of his lungs and was determined to be cancer. Starting Thursday, he’ll undergo a stronger, more aggressive chemotherapy treatment, and doctors will harvest his stem cells to further treatment.
Joshua’s mother is a U.S. Air Force major who is stationed at Peterson Air Force Base. His family just moved to the Springs in March, and he’s already being welcomed wholeheartedly into the community.
And yes, Joshua got plenty of free donuts.
