Best Warrior competition puts fitness of military members to the test

With the amount of physical activity the military could face, it’s important to stay in shape.

Only seven hours of sleep over the past three days, and still two days to go.

Soldiers and airmen continue to compete in live-fire exercises, making medical calls, even navigating unfamiliar buildings.

“You’re carrying heavy weapon systems, you’re carrying about 50 pounds plus on your back, on your self, you’re running here, you’re walking there,” said SPC. Alan Landeros.

Skills TSgt. Brandon Hood says are vital in the military.

“These could be used in any kind of situation. In the outdoors, in a deployed environment.”

On the field at Fort Carson, SPC. Landeros ran from site to site, shooting at targets.

“A lot of these tasks require you to run places and walk a lot of miles,” he said.

Others moving from room to room, showing staying fit is a must.

“It’s paramount, I can’t stress fitness enough,” said TSgt. Hood.

“If you’re not in shape, you’re putting yourself, your unit, your fellow soldiers at risk,” said. SPC. Landeros.

Both men saying the National Guard keeps them physically and mentally fit.

The winners of this weekend’s Best Warrior competition will go on to compete in New Mexico in May.
