Crews working hazmat situation near La Junta water treatment plant

The Colorado State Patrol Hazardous Materials team is working an incident at the La Junta water treatment plant, and part of Highway 50 was shut down Tuesday.

CSP says the report came in around 3 p.m. that there was a possible chlorine spill in the area. It was later confirmed that a 150-pound cylinder began leaking chlorine gas while it was being installed.

Two workers had to be treated for inhalation of the gas, but no serious injuries were reported.

We’ve reached out to the La Junta Fire Department for more information on the spill. It’s not clear if the spill has been contained or if any water has been contaminated. No boil water notice has been issued by the city.
