Large fire destroys southeast Colorado Springs townhomes

The Colorado Springs Fire Department responded to a large structure fire in the southeast side of town Monday afternoon that claimed multiple townhomes.

The three-alarm fire was at a townhome complex on Charleston Drive. ( MAP ) The fire tore through the townhome complex, and pictures showed the front facades were left as husks. It’s not known exactly how many units were destroyed or damaged, but at least 20 units were impacted.

CSFD said affected residents can go to First Pentecostal Church at 2950 Monica Drive West.

Smoke could be seen from miles away, and small embers continued to burn as of 5 p.m. ( PHOTOS ) Emergency officials encouraged travelers to avoid the area near Hancock and Astrozon Blvd.

There haven’t been reports of injuries. CSFD said several pets have been rescued so far, but residents say many pets are still missing.

CSFD said firefighters could be on scene for up to 48 hours to monitor the lingering hot spots.

Late Monday, a CSFD spokesperson said “careless smoking” is believed to be the cause of the blaze.

Investigators believe the resulting fire caused a “natural gas failure” at the meter, leading to rapid fire growth.
