UPDATE: Grass fire northeast of Colorado Springs now contained

Multiple fire departments are battling a grass fire that broke out near Falcon by Woodmen Road Tuesday afternoon and sent a plume of smoke into the sky over Colorado Springs.

Falcon Fire Department crews say the fire is between Golden Sage and Mohawk (MAP). We don’t yet know how many acres have been burned. The fire was reported to be contained by about 4:10 p.m.

The fire moved across Tamlin Road around 3:45 p.m., according to the Colorado Springs Fire Department. It hit a patch of scrub oak, which caused darker smoke. ( PHOTOS )

People are advised to avoid the area until the fire is under control. Falcon FD said eastbound Woodmen Road was down to one lane and that traffic was backed up but moving.

Falcon FD said it started when a truck carrying hay caught fire on Woodmen. The flames then pushed south toward Banning Lewis Ranch. Winds were reported to be about 15-20 mph near the fire line, according to CSFD.

No injuries were reported.
