Snow moving in tonight – 3/18/18

TONIGHT: An area of low pressure will be spinning through the region this evening. This will bring a very active 24 hours of weather for Southern Colorado. The late afternoon brings a rain snow mix over the mountains with showers or an isolated thunderstorm or two over the eastern plains. This activity eventually makes its way down to the lower elevations after 7PM. Strong winds will gust from the north at over 40 mph. A gust to 50 mph can’t be ruled out over the eastern plains. The highest impacts will likely be in Teller County and along the Palmer Divide when a rain snow mix transitions to all snow. When you combine this with the wind, blizzard-like conditions will likely be seen, creating hazardous travel. Snow accumulations will be the greatest around Monument. Right now, 2-4″ looks likely with isolated higher totals between 5-7″. Teller County could see between 1-3″ (or just slightly more). North winds should dry us out the further south you go, so only a trace to 1″ is possible in Colorado Springs. The southeast plains near Kim and Springfield could pick up an isolated spot of 1″ or so. If this storm track shifts at all, areas could end up with more or less. Please check back frequently for any changes.

EXTENDED: Breezy and cool weather is expected tomorrow. A few more snow showers are possible for the afternoon and then things look quiet through the rest of the week. Thursday will be very warm and windy, which means high fire danger could be possible.
