More layoffs expected for Pulitzer Prize winner The Denver Post

It was announced on Wednesday that The Denver Post newsroom is facing another staff cut.

Editor Lee Ann Colacioppo told its newsroom that another 30 percent of employees would be let go over the next couple of months.

Our affiliates at Denver7 report that there have been multiple layoffs over the past few years under Denver-based MediaNews Group (known as Digital First Media), which is controlled primarily by Alden Global Capital.

Staffers told Denver7 that there were between 90 and 100 newsroom employees at The Post as of Wednesday.

Multiple reports say those who will be cut will include Denver Newspaper Guild Union positions and a handful of the paper’s news management team. At least 25 jobs will be eliminated by July 1.

“These job losses are painful, and we know meaningful work will not get done because talented journalists have left the organization,” Colacioppo wrote in a memo to staffers. “I’m sure some commenters will cheer what they believe is the eventual demise of the mainstream media, but there is nothing to celebrate when a city has fewer journalists working in it.”

The Post said employees can volunteer to leave and apply for severance packages over the next week.
