Colorado Springs concrete company facing fines for trench collapse

A Colorado Springs construction company may have to pay nearly $100,000 in penalties because of a trench collapse last December that injured one worker.

The trench collapse happened on Dec. 7 near Interstate 25 and Uintah Street when workers with Langston Concrete Inc. were preparing to install a diverter box at a stormwater pipe.

Four employees were covered by dirt; one of the workers was buried from the waist down and suffered a broken hip and femur.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited the company for not moving employees from a hazardous work area and failing to install cave-in protection, according to a news release sent Wednesday.

OSHA proposed penalties against Langston Concrete Inc. totaling $90,535.
