El Paso County coroner identifies man found inside burning car

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office says Bartholomew Simmons, 32, was inside the car that burned down at the corner of Cimarron and Sahwatch Streets last Tuesday.

It wasn’t until the fire was completely out that CSPD found evidence of human remains inside. Lt. Howard Black with CSPD confirmed it was a man found inside the car.

Black said Simmons shot himself inside the car. Police say it’s unclear if he shot himself before or right after the car caught fire.

Police later found a suspicious package in the car that had possible explosive materials in it. The Metro Bomb Squad responded and safely disposed of the device.
