Pueblo Chamber of Commerce: “Trump’s tariffs are a big win”

City leaders in Pueblo are in full support of the new steel and aluminum tariffs imposed by President Trump.

“We’ve always followed this and hoped the federal government would step in,” said Rod Slyhoff, Pueblo Chamber of Commerce President.

Evraz North America, a steel-fabricating giant based in Pueblo, is in support of the new measure stating imports hurt their domestic industry and have cost them hundreds of jobs.

“It sure is a great step in the right direction,” said Slyhoff.

Slyhoff said the tariffs will sustain long-term job growth in Pueblo.

“You will see more jobs be available because they can compete with their products,” he said.

Jeff Shaw, the President of the Pueblo Economic Development Corporation agrees.

“People are still going to need to transport a product on rail, and they’ll still need to rebuild buildings,” he said.

On the other side, republican lawmakers in Washington oppose the tariffs citing concerns of a possible ‘tariff war’ sparking among our neighboring countries.
