Jail escapee arrested in southern Colorado, 1 still loose

One of the two escapees from the Conejos County Jail is back in custody after a resident in Sanford phoned in a tip about a suspicious person.

Kyle Pauley and Lawrence Gonzales were missing after a bed check Saturday at the jail in Antonito. The Colorado State Patrol put out a statewide notice about the escape and asked for the public’s help finding them.

At about 7:30 Tuesday morning, Pauley was seen walking along 4th Street in Sanford, and a trooper tried to contact him. Pauley took off on foot and led troopers through a field before hiding in a ditch, but the trooper and officers with the La Jara Police Department took him into custody.

Sanford is about 17 miles north of Antonito.

Gonzales is still on the loose, and police say to be aware of any suspicious people in the area.
