How to opt out of Facebook face recognition

An announcement, of sorts, was placed in many Facebook users’ news feeds in the past few days about the social network’s use of face recognition technology.

The headline says “Introducing Face Recognition,” but here’s the thing: Facebook has been using face recognition technology for years.

The social network has used the tech in photo tagging and profile security, but it plans on expanding that use. The announcement also lets users know if they’re opted in to using the technology.

But if you don’t want Facebook storing your data, you can opt out by going to settings (in the top right dropdown menu on PC/Mac) and then clicking the Face Recognition tab. From there, you can choose whether or not you want Facebook to include you in its face recognition.

The timing is also interesting, as a federal judge OK’d a lawsuit against Facebook for its collection of biometric data, including faces.
