Euthanasia drug found in Gravy Train dog food
If you buy Gravy Train for your dog, you may want to check the label; its manufacturer voluntarily issued a recall this week after a study found low levels of a euthanasia drug in the food.
J.M. Smucker Company is withdrawing quantities of Gravy Train, Kibbles ‘N Bits, and Skippy wet dog food products because of pentobarbital found in an ingredient.
Pentobarbital is used to reduce anxiety in animals and put them to sleep, according to the Clean Label Project. The study, conducted by TV station WJLA and Ellipse Analytics, found the compound inside 60 percent of Gravy Train products that were tested.
The company said the amount of pentobarbital found wasn’t enough to pose a health or safety risk, but that the presence is still unacceptable.
