70-year-old substitute teacher in Salida arrested for child sex crimes

Salida police arrested a 70-year-old substitute teacher this week for sexual assault on a child and multiple other crimes.

Wayne Zulla of Howard, Colorado, is facing six charges, including third-degree assault, harassment, child abuse, unlawful sexual conduct, sex assault, and sex assault on a child by one in a position of trust.

Zulla was listed as a teacher at Salida Middle School, and police interviewed several students during the investigation before getting an arrest warrant. It’s not clear if any or all of the victims were students.

Police arrested Zulla Thursday evening without incident, and he’s being held on a $10,000 cash-only bond. His mugshot wasn’t immediately available. His first court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 27.
