Widefield School District goes blue to support law enforcement

The color blue was just about everywhere you looked at Widefield High School on February 13.

It was a way to say “thank you” to all law enforcement, especially the man who keeps them safe: Deputy Matthew McGough.

“We are doing a blue-out to show our support,” senior Kayler Miles said.

It was just what Deputy McGough needed after Deputy Micah Flick’s death last week.

McGough was good friends with Flick, and the loss hit him hard.

“To lose someone like him… it’s been a rough week but seeing this just made it so much better,” McGough said.

More than 9,000 students and staff throughout the district donned blue for the occasion. They also decorated McGough’s office with a thin blue line and covered it in thank-you notes.

Staff hoped the day would also teach students to respect law enforcement.

“We’re just people who want to go home to our families,” McGough said. “We need to work together with the community.”

“Getting to know Deputy McGough has made me realize he’s just a person, and he’s really nice,” Miles said.

McGough is still reading through all the thank-you letters.
