We’re learning more about what drove Nikolas Cruz to violence. We do know he had an extensive social media presence with one account filled with gruesome photos. KRDO NewsChannel 13’s Cinthia Maldonado spent the day looking into his past.
On social media Cruz appeared to have a tendency for violence. His posts; ranging from weapons to dead animals made it clear he was troubled. Warning, some of the images may be graphic.

“He carried multiple guns, he showed me his guns.”
Cruz showcased an image of a dismembered frog and staring down the barrel of a gun on his profile.
“This is really hard to grasp.”
To some former classmates, it’s no surprise his name is involved. “I think everyone in the school had in the back of their mind that if anyone was supposed to do this, most likely it would have been him.
A year ago, Cruz was expelled from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School for misconduct.
According to his 10th grade teacher, Cruz did not like being labeled Hispanic and chose not to speak Spanish.
In fact, a day after the mass shooting, a white nationalists group near Tallahassee confirmed Cruz was a member of a para-militia group.
The leader of the Republic of Florida said Cruz never talked about murder but did use slurs against African-Americans and Muslims.
Photos posted to his social media page show Cruz, with his face covered wearing a ‘Make American Great Again’ hat.
To his former employer Cruz was a quiet young man. “He was always very nice, shy, head usually down. Little scraggly hair but there really never posed any problem with people. Really never had any complaints from customers, nothing like that.
The family that took in Cruz, after his adoptive mother died admitted he was depressed and did not know of his social media activity or that he was capable of something like this.
So far, no motive has been revealed as the investigation is still in its early stages.
