Colorado Springs police say deputy’s shooting investigation still extremely active

One week after a tragic shooting on Galley Road and Murray Boulevard that took the life Deputy Micah Flick and injured four other people, Colorado Springs police are still working out the details of exactly what happened, including who shot who.

Just before 4 p.m. last Monday, the auto theft task force was following a stolen car that led them to the Murray Hill Apartments. When the suspect exited the vehicle, “a struggle ensued. The suspect then drew a handgun and began firing. Three task force detectives then returned gunfire,” according to a news release.

Colorado Springs police say they’re not sure when another update will come.

Lt. Howard Black says, “We will not be releasing additional information until the [Deadly Force Investigation Team] investigation is complete. I cannot give you a definitive timeline, these investigations are dynamic. The timeline is based on each individual investigation.”

His wife, Rachael Flick, spoke before the audience Saturday afternoon saying her husband’s actions may have saved lives. She said, “the suspect opened fire and Micah literally used his body as a shield and put himself between his killer and fellow officers.”

Deputy Scott Stone was also hit. Jacqueline Kirby with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said he’s still recovering in the hospital. She wasn’t sure when he’d be released.

The bystander caught in gunfire, Thomas Villanueva, is still awaiting a surgery that may determine whether or not he’ll walk again. He spoke from his hospital bed last week and said, “I’m going to make it. I’m going to start walking again. I know that. I have faith in God.”

His GoFundMe page says a scheduled surgery was cancelled Monday morning. Villanueva’s family says he is suffering from pneumonia and doctors are still waiting for one of his lungs to re-expand.
