Teller County Sheriff speaks on risks officers take following deputies killed in Colorado

Over the past five weeks, three Colorado deputies have been killed in the line of duty.

All of them responding to seemingly “routine” calls.

Monday, an auto theft task force was doing what they do every day when things turned deadly in an instant, killing Deputy Micah Flick of the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

In Douglas County, Deputy Zackari Parrish was responding to a disturbance call when he was shot and killed.

Adams County Deputy Heath Gumm was killed while at an assault in progress.

Teller County Sheriff Jason Mikesell said while no two calls are the same, law enforcement officers train for everything they can.

“There’s always that unexpected moment,” Mikesell said. “There’s always those things that happen that we can’t control.”

El Paso County Sheriff Bill Elder also said despite losing one of their own, his deputies will continue to serve the community faithfully.

“They will continue to do the jobs that we asked them to do day in and day out,” Elder said. “These are dangerous jobs and dangerous times.”
