Colorado Springs man guilty of murder in Vermijo Avenue shooting

A man on trial for the fatal shooting of a 25-year-old last April in south Colorado Springs was found guilty of first-degree murder Thursday.

DeAndre Vonte Smith awaited sentencing Thursday afternoon after the verdict was revealed. A jury found Smith responsible for the death of Alton Joseph Kelly, according to the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

The shooting happened around 3 a.m. on April 12, 2017 in the 800 block of E. Vermijo Avenue. When police arrived, they found Kelly lying on the ground outside a home.
