Third Colorado Springs high school threatened over social media

Students at Liberty High School could only go to class through one entry door Wednesday morning. This comes after an alleged threat on Snapchat circulated the night before.

Colorado Springs police and School District 20 issued extra security measures for students. In addition to the limited entryway, several officers were seen monitoring the campus.

At 10:30 a.m., the school’s principal announced the threat was deemed not credible but that didn’t stop several students from leaving for the day.

Dozens of parents were seen entering the parking lot and leaving with their kids. Other students left campus on their own after parents cleared them through the attendance office.

One said, “I just don’t feel safe here. I just want to leave. Another, “You never know. It’s just like we’re not going to get any school work done today because of this stuff, so there’s no point.”

This is the third high school to face a threat over social media in the last seven days. Air Academy High School was at the end of last week and Mitchell High School occurred on Monday. Both were deemed unfounded.

Devra Ashby with Colorado Springs School District 11 said, “Even if it’s something that we feel doesn’t hold much weight, we still investigate it cause this day and age, you can never be too cautious.”

Colorado Springs police say their investigation into this specific threat has not been closed. Lt. Howard Black said he was waiting on one social media platform to confirm some details before they finalized their reports.
