Douglas Co. releases body cam video of fatal NYE shooting

Hours of body camera footage showing the moment that a Highlands Ranch man opened fire on multiple deputies have now been released from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Tony Spurlock said the raw footage from the body cameras was released Tuesday because he wanted the public to see it. He said it showed his officers followed the right procedure before they were ambushed by the gunman, Matthew Riehl.

Eight officers who were involved in fatal shooting on New Year’s Eve Day are seen interacting with Riehl.

Editor’s note: KRDO NewsChannel 13 cut together several clips from deputies’ body cameras recorded during the confrontation with Riehl. You can see that clip HERE. The final part of the clip shows the first interaction with Riehl. Viewer discretion is advised.

Deputy Zackari Parrish’s body camera footage only shows the first call he made to Riehl’s apartment. He’s seen interacting Riehl’s roommate and later with the gunman himself.

Riehl can be heard yelling out, “assault, assault, rape, rape.”

Parrish approaches Riehl and asks him to stop yelling or else he’d have to arrested for “disorderly conduct.”

Deputy Taylor Davis, who walked into Riehl’s apartment along Parrish, is seen walking through the gunman’s front door and then up to his bedroom.

When officers identify themselves, Riehl starts shooting.

Davis is seen running towards a window and using her hand to break it open. She jumps from the second floor, hitting the ground, and then running away from the apartment. She can be heard telling other deputies, “Parrish is still inside.”
