A tale of two seasons

It is not uncommon in the State of Colorado to see an afternoon of warmth and fire danger, followed by snow and cold the very next day.

High pressure over Colorado on Tuesday allowed for a day of mostly sunny weather. A dip in the jet stream and and area of low pressure just to the west created a more southwest wind flow pattern in our region. These winds make their way to the surface and can dry us out quite a bit. Because it also makes things a bit breezy, elevated fire danger was also a concern. Not only do these winds dry the air out, but these winds can also warm us up quite a bit. That is why places in southern Colorado saw near record warmth on Tuesday afternoon.

By Wednesday evening, this high pressure system will be replaced by a cold front and an area of low pressure. These low pressure systems can bring a cool shot of air and if they carry enough moisture, can also produce snowfall. So yes, though it may seem strange, it is not uncommon in Colorado to see a day of spring-like weather, followed by winter only 24 hours later.
