Coyote sightings spike in Colorado

More and more Coloradans along the Front Range have started reporting coyote sightings.

January is mating season for coyotes which means not only are they out and about, but they are also acting more aggressive.

The City of Lafayette is one of the areas that has had numerous sightings. It is urging its residents to keep an eye out for their pets. Coyotes will often attack small animals to extinguish a threat to their mating boundaries or because the coyotes view them as prey.

When walking alone or with pets on a leash, it is recommended to make loud sounds and carry a noisemaker such as a cow bell. Pets should also not be left unattended in backyards and pet food should not be left outside.

If you encounter an agressive coyote, call Colorado Parks and Wildlife at 303-291-7227.
