Colorado Springs police find 212 pounds of pot linked to Mexican cartel

Colorado Springs police say a tip from a property manager led to the discovery of more than 200 pounds of processed marijuana in an El Paso County house, and evidence points to a link with a Mexican drug cartel.

Police made the discovery Tuesday at a house in the 6000 block of Fieldview Way, but while a suspect has been identified, no arrests were made as of Wednesday.

According to a news release, a property manager couldn’t get ahold of a resident after calling and sending emails, so the manager went to the house to check on them. That’s when the manager found a large amount of marijuana in “various stages of packaging, ready to be distributed.”

The property manager reported the discovery to CSPD’s Metro Vice, Narcotics and Intelligence Division, who began investigating.

Police executed the search warrant at the house and found 212 pounds of marijuana and six handguns. Police say one of the handguns was reported stolen from a California law enforcement officer earlier in the year, though the news release doesn’t say if it was a police-issued handgun.

No one was inside the house at the time of the search.

CSPD says there’s evidence that the marijuana is affiliated with a Mexican drug cartel, but the specific cartel isn’t named. Police didn’t say what evidence led them to that conclusion.
