Sword-wielding robbery suspect threatens to cut off Colorado Springs bank teller’s hands

The teller involved in Tuesday’s bank robbery in Colorado Springs says she feared for her life, according to the arrest affidavit.

The victim told investigators that the suspect, later identified as 39-year-old Anthony Hammond, entered the TCF Bank off N. Academy at around 11:30 a.m. with a sword in one hand and a white canvas bag in the other. She said that he walked up to her and yelled, “you’re gonna give $20,000 right now or I’m gonna cut your hands off.”

The bank manager confirmed the teller’s statements and told police that he ended up only taking $4,381 out of the teller’s register. She added that the suspect had left the bank and ran into the apartment complex located at 4380 Morning Sun Avenue.

After speaking with the apartment manager and the staff, officers were able to determine that the suspect was Anthony Hammond and that he had been living in the complex since May of 2017. There was a short standoff, but Hammond eventually turned himself over.

While searching his apartment, officers found evidence linking Hammond to the bank robbery as well as the robbery on December 12 at the King Soopers off Austin Bluffs Parkway.

Hammond has been booked into the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center on aggravated robbery charges.
