Sword-wielding robbery suspect arrested at Colorado Springs apartment complex

Colorado Springs police officers set up outside an apartment complex near Austin Bluffs Pkwy. and N. Academy Blvd. and arrested a suspect involved in a robbery at a nearby bank Tuesday.

The robbery happened at around 11:30 a.m. at a TCF Bank on N. Academy Blvd. According to the Colorado Springs Police Department, Anthony Hammond, 30, was wielding a sword when he got away with cash from the bank.

A short time later, witnesses contacted police stating that they had seen the suspect run into an apartment at Residents at Austin Bluffs. Police responded and there was a short standoff. Hammond eventually surrendered and was arrested at around 3:30 p.m.

During the search of the apartment, investigators found evidence proving that he robbed the TCF Bank as well as a nearby grocery store on December 12.

Hammond has been booked into the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center on aggravated robbery charges.
