Marty’s Tuesday Morning Forecast – Snow For Some! 12/26/17
Today: A cold front has brought another surge of cold air up against the mountains overnight. Some areas on the plains will have low clouds, and possibly some patchy freezing fog and/or some very light snow/flurries this morning. Snowfall accumulations should remain light, but some areas could receive upwards of an inch, and a few slick spots may be found on local roadways. Meanwhile, the mountain areas will remain mostly clear today! While the air behind the cold front is quite cold, it is also shallow, so temperatures today will again vary by elevation. Low lying areas in eastern Colorado will only warm into the teens and 20s this afternoon, while some locations on the higher terrain will warm into the 30s and 40s. The warmest air should again be found on the higher terrain to the south and west of Pueblo. Low clouds should break up this afternoon leaving most areas under a partly cloudy sky, but the wind may pick up some too, especially over and near the mountains.
Tonight: Partly cloudy early, then areas of patchy low cloud cover and/or freezing fog may redevelop over low lying areas in eastern Colorado late. Temperatures will fall in the single digits and teens for most areas by morning, but a few spots on the higher terrain may remain in the 20s.. The snow over the ski resorts should gradually decrease in both coverage and intensity overnight.
Extended: As the week progresses there are indications that the shallow layer of cold air will slowly recede from the I-25 corridor, and if this occurs we will notice a gradual warming with some periods of wind. It is very difficult to know where the western edge of pools of cold air like this will settle, especially several days ahead of time, and if we’re wrong we would expect the air to be much colder than we are currently forecasting for later this week. We’ll track the position of the cold air closely as we approach the New Year!
