Wintry weather creating traffic problems throughout Colorado

Colorado Department of Transportation is reporting major back-ups and closures throughout Colorado.

I-70 is closed between Golden and Silverthorne due to heavy snow and whiteout conditions. C-DOT is asking drivers to avoid the area for now. There is no estimate as to when the road will reopen.

A shelter has been opened at Vail City Hall tonight for stranded drivers. It is free of charge, and pets are allowed.

The closures began in the afternoon on Saturday in Clear Creek County.

Some drivers on social media said they were stranded for hours, and unable to reach their holiday destinations.

C-DOT said crews were repositioning snowplows to try to deal with the unsafe conditions but could not keep up.

Some areas are reporting visibility at just five feet.

Around 8 o’clock on Saturday night, the Eisenhower Tunnel lost power and control of lights on the highway. The digital message boards were also down.

Highway 40 is also closed in both directions from I-70 to Winter Park. There is no estimate for it reopening at this time.

C-DOT is also putting out tips to stay safe in these conditions.

Make sure you have a full tank of gas, snacks and water.

It is also good to store a blanket and first aid kit in case of an emergency.

C-DOT is asking drivers to be patient while it continues to deal with the severe conditions.
