Springs Rescue Mission hosts Christmas meal
Two hundred volunteers from around the city came together to feed the homeless of Colorado Springs. One hundred twenty turkeys, green beans, stuffing and mashed potatoes fed a room full of people who may not have gotten a hot meal otherwise. “This is what you’re supposed to do,” said volunteer Catherine Humphrey. Humphrey has been volunteering with the Springs Rescue Mission for almost four years. “It’s your responsibility to take care of people and to help others, and as long as you give back and take care of other people, they’ll take care of you,” Humphrey said. Chef Manny Coss helped prepare this meal for the first time this year. “I was once in their spot as well, so I can relate,” Coss said. Coss, who use to be homeless, is the success story the rescue mission is pushing for everyone else in the room. “Doing everything that we can to try and provide hope and dignity for individuals who may be struggling at this Christmastime,” said Travis Williams, the vice president of the Springs Rescue mission.
The rescue mission expected to feed between 800 and 1,000 people, and it grows every year. “More and more people are coming to take advantage and to utilize resources and hopefully find their next pathway to whatever that better might look like to them,” Williams said.
