Pueblo building new town homes

More than two hundred Pueblo residents are getting a new home with a multimillion dollar construction project that will be replacing the Sangre de Cristo apartments.

Pueblo Housing Authority started working with residents back in 2006 to find out what they wanted in a new apartment complex.

The complex is called “Uplands Townhomes.”

Currently, the apartments are known as the, “projects” or “bricks.”

Mothers Mistie Saunders and Crystal Perley both say, “If you mind your own business, it’s not bad.”

They’re both hoping this new project changes the way people view the area. Executive director of House Authority Pueblo says, Ted Ortiviz says, “This community is kind of pegged with a negative connotation but these are really great folks and great residents that we have here.

The new location for the apartment is directly behind the old complex. It’ll broken up into three phases the first of which has already broken ground. Phase two won’t start until residents can move into the new townhomes and their previous buildings can be demolished.

“Nobody in any of the phases will be without a unit to live in because it’s a mirror image of what we’re taking down and what we’re building,” Ortiviz says.
The townhomes also come with their own backyards, something residents say will give them more privacy. The full project is expected to be complete in 2022.
