Man arrested for beating, firing shots at vehicle theft suspect in Colorado Springs
A 20-year-old was taken into custody earlier this week for firing shots at a vehicle theft suspect and “severely” beating him.
Frank Michael Oyola-Ortega is now facing a charge of attempted second-degree murder for what was supposed to be just helping his friend chase after the suspect that stole his vehicle.
Colorado Springs police got a call at around 8:30 p.m. on December 18 from a victim saying he had found his stolen vehicle parked near the Safeway at Academy Boulevard and Union Boulevard.
While officers were on their way, the theft suspect returned to the vehicle. The victim and his friends including Frank tried confronting the suspect, but he was able to drive away in the victim’s vehicle.
The victim and his group started chasing the suspect through a neighborhood. According to police, Frank fired at the theft suspect at least three times. After several blocks, the group was able to trap the suspect. Investigators believe Frank then pulled him out and “severely” beat him with the butt of a gun.
Frank left the scene before officers arrived. The theft victim, as well as the rest of the group, told police that there was no one else involved, but after further investigation, officers were able to connect Frank to the incident.
Frank was arrested on December 20. He had in his possession a .380 handgun.
No details were given on the theft suspect and whether he would be charged.
This is an ongoing investigation.
