Pueblo PD investigating string of armed carjackings, all within 8 hours

The Pueblo Police Department is warning people of a new string of armed carjackings that happened within eight hours of each other.

The latest theft happened Wednesday morning shortly before 5 a.m. on Evans and Summit Avenue. Police say two men approached the vehicle with a gun and forced the driver out of the car and took off. Officers were able to find the car and return it to its owner. Investigators believe the victim knew the suspects.

Then on Tuesday night, at around 9 p.m., a woman says she was driving down Bonnymede Road when a man with his face covered walked into the middle of the street forcing her to stop. The victim says the man approached her car and was carrying a gun.

“He was at my door and had a gun and said, ‘get out of the car or I’ll shoot you.'” The victim asked KRDO to not release her identity for the safety of her family. Scared for her life, she listened and watched as the suspect sped off in her car.

What makes this armed car theft different from the others is that the victim says she could have gotten away if she had just driven off after the man approached her.

Pueblo police’s public information officer, Captain Kenny Rider says she did the right thing, and that confronting an armed carjacker is not worth losing a life.

“Do what you got to do to get out of the vehicle,” Rider said. “The vehicle is not worth your life, and we would rather investigate an auto theft than a homicide.”

The victim reported a stolen silver 2014 Mazda 5 with a Colorado license plate of UAQ576. If you see this vehicle, you are encouraged to report it to police.
