Two people rescued in early morning house fire in south Colorado Springs
Colorado Springs Fire rescued two people from a basement Monday morning after a house fire broke out in a home in south Colorado Springs.
Heavy smoke and flames could be seen around 5:45 a.m. on Yosemite Drive. Crews were on scene within 6 minutes of the call, but the home was fully involved when they arrived.
Fire crews say the family that lives in the home will likely be displaced for some time.
In all, it took crews about 20 minutes to get the fire fully under control.
One of the main obstacles of fighting the fire, though, was that two people were essentially trapped in the basement. The stairs leading up from that area led right to where the fire was burning most intensely, so the occupants were unable to get out.
CSFD says since the home is older, likely built in the 1950’s the windows were very small and difficult to access. Building codes are different for newer homes, so crews do not encounter this problem as often.
After some intense labor, crews were able to get the two people to safety.
“They were definitely an imminent danger. The smoke would have traveled down and the smokes get you first, the heat comes along after that. But they got out in time,” said Lt. Fred Varnell with CSFD.
One of the victims was taken to the hospital, and the other was reportedly ok.
Two other people were also reportedly in the home at the time of the fire but managed to get out before crews arrived.
CSFD says an investigation is underway into how the fire started.
