Colorado Gives Day: Safeway Foundation donates more than $44,000 to local food bank

Today’s Colorado Gives Day and the Safeway Foundation donated over $44,000 to the food bank Care and Share in Colorado Springs.

Safeway employees presented an oversize check to Care and Share for $44,756-thousand to help feed local children in need. The money will be used to feed students breakfast through school pantries and the Send Hunger Packing program. This will also provide weekend backpacks of food for elementary and middle school students. Safeway representative Kris Staaf says the foundation is designed to build awareness and raise funds in an effort to eradicate childhood hunger in the U.S.

“It’s really the pennies, nickels, and dimes that add all up. Engaging our employees and customers it’s a-win-win for the community.”

“$44,000 dollars shows that this community cares about its children and about the success they’ll have in the future. We’re able to transform that money into meals and snacks to give it to the schools we work with,” says Shannon Brice.

25 Safeway stores in Southern Colorado raised the money at the check stands in September and October during the Hunger Is campaign.
