Line Technician Graduates show what they Learned in Colorado Springs

It’s not your typical graduation ceremony.

On Friday, 25 soon to be graduates from the Rocky Mountain Lineman School at Trinidad State showed their family and friends what they learned over the last several weeks.

Some of the students are straight out of High School. Over the course of 15 weeks, have more than a hundred hours of training on 30 foot power poles. They also learned about safety, math, first aid, driving large trucks and department of transportation rules.

At Pikes Peak Community College, Doug Dustin, one of the field instructors says the students had to perform four of their learned skills, “They go through 50 skills and this is just four of the 50.”

Each of the 25 had to perform the tasks and they must do it quickly as each one has to be completed in three minutes. Bronson Ring, one of the graduates says what they do takes a lot of focus, “They all take a lot of mental capacity and physical capacity.”

There is some added pressure during the graduation. Scouts looking at each of the students performances for the chance to offer them a job. Dustin says four of the graduates already received offers, “We have four students that will be going to work on Monday.”

Bronson says he became great friends with the other graduates in the class. He and the others know that their job is vital to society and that they will have to go out no matter the weather to get power back to the community. “I think that shows a lot about the guys who are choosing this career,” says Bronson. “It takes a big heart to be out here, you are really doing it for everybody else.”

After the performance, each of the students received their certificate and are ready to start their careers.
