Man arrested after attempting to shoot at Pueblo police officers

Police say a suicidal man was arrested after attempting to shoot officers on Sunday night.

The incident happened on the Union Avenue Bridge near Dutch Clark Stadium at around 5 p.m.

Police say officers were trying to negotiate Kevin Montoya off the bridge when he fired a shot into the air. He was also holding a large bottle of alcohol.

After a short time, Montoya walked down onto the river trail and then along a rock path that led toward the water. Police say Montoya stumbled out onto the rocks and “pointed the handgun at surrounding officers several times.”

According to Pueblo police, he was “working the action on the handgun and it appeared to malfunction at times.”

Montoya then banged the handgun onto the rocks and fired another round into the river.

Fortunately, he soon threw something in the water, which police believe was the gun. Montoya then slumped over and allowed officers to arrest him.

He is facing charges of menacing, reckless endangerment and violation of restraining order.

After further investigation, officers discovered that Montoya had also fired his gun at a group of teenagers earlier that day. Luckily, none of them were injured.
