Teller County gets brunt of season’s first snow in southern Colorado

Teller County’s first taste of winter this season affected the county differently in areas just a few miles apart.
Although snow fell for much of the day and fell heavily at times, the Divide area appeared to have the heaviest accumulation — several inches — while most of the snowfall in neighboring Woodland Park melted.

The pavement in Woodland Park was still warm after a mild weekend, and the application of liquid salt by road crews along U.S. 24 likely kept the highway free of ice and snow. But even neighborhood streets and sidewalks were wet at worst.

Meanwhile, the higher elevation and stronger winds in Divide created snowpack on the highway and other roads there. Driving conditions were slick, and several passes by plows were needed to clear away the snow.

The snow wasn’t enough to interrupt the normal workday routine, except for a few minor crashes reported by the Teller County Sheriff’s Office.

“I was expecting more snow,” said one resident. “It takes a lot of snow for us to even notice it up here.”

Another resident said he liked the way the fall colors stand out more in snow.
