‘I wasn’t ready to die,’ says Vegas victim from hospital bed

LAS VEGAS (AP) – Los Angeles nurse Natalie Vanderstay saw people dying as she fled the massacre on the Las Vegas Strip with a bleeding stomach and a ripped-open leg.

The 43-year-old says she stepped on people to save herself, which is something that may haunt her forever. She says, “I wasn’t ready to die.”

Vanderstay spoke to reporters from her bed at University Medical Center on Tuesday. She is among the more than 500 people injured in Sunday’s attack, the deadliest shooting in modern U.S. history. Fifty-nine people were killed.

Vanderstay says she found a cab with people inside and told them she’d been shot. The strangers took her in and the quick-thinking cabbie drove her to the state’s only Level I trauma center.

She credits him with saving her life.
