Three people injured in fire at motel in Cripple Creek

Three people, including a police officer, were hurt in a motel fire in Cripple Creek on Tuesday morning.

The fire began at around 3:19 a.m. at the Cripple Creek Motel on Bison Street.

Both the Cripple Creek and Teller County fire responded and knocked the fire down in about 40 minutes.

Authorities have deemed the motel a complete loss and believe it was an accident.

Bison road is currently closed at Highway 67 as investigators work on finding out the cause of the fire.

Three people were taken to the hospital via helicopter for burns and smoke inhalation. One was a Cripple Creek police officer going door-to-door evacuating people and the other two were residents.

All three are expected to fully recover.

Officials believe the motel was primarily used for casino employees and around 25 people including a 2-year-old child were displaced and relocated to the Gold King Mountain Inn.

The Red Cross is also helping out. The city says the Aspen Mine Center (local community assistance organization) has responded with clothing for the displaced guests.

The Cripple Creek Police Department, the Teller County Sheriff’s Office, and the CBI are investigating.
