Denver soon to license pot clubs, but few may open

Colorado’s largest city is on the brink of licensing some of the nation’s first legal marijuana clubs.

But Denver may not have many takers when applications open by the end of the month.

That’s because the city has set up elaborate hurdles for potential weed-friendly coffee shops and gathering places. Zoning restrictions mean few areas are even eligible for a club.

Denver voters approved bring-your-own-pot clubs last year. It was a ballot measure prompted by city officials’ dragging their feet on calls to give legal pot smokers a place to use the drug.
