Colorado Springs school districts prepare for Eclipse Day

As Eclipse Day inches closer, we’re finding out how Colorado Springs school districts plan to spend the day.

District 11 leaders say viewing the Eclipse is optional for some students, while others are being encouraged to participate in school-wide viewings.

Lisa Siebert is a Chipita Elementary School parent. Students there will be participating in the viewing, which Siebert says is priceless.

“I still remember seeing one I think in the late 70’s when I was little so it makes an impact and I just think it’s a great opportunity to see something wonderful,” Siebert explained.

Each school within the district is requiring parents to sign a permission slip like this one if they do want their kids to participate in those activities.

That’s because of the risk presented: Any exposure to the sun without proper eyewear could cause damage.

“There’s instructions — with the younger kiddos, they’re going to be instructed to put the glasses on, look at the eclipse, turn around, take the glasses off,” Devra Ashby, D-11 spokeswoman explained.

Those release forms must be completed and turned in ahead of the Eclipse viewing for D-11 students. Parents in all other districts are urged to contact teachers about specific policies.
