Pueblo students making their own music at Central High School STEM boot camp

Students at Central High School in Pueblo are taking part in a mini-course called “Making Tunes With Sound Studio”.

According to the Pueblo Chieftain, it’s part of the third annual Central High STEM boot camp. It gives incoming freshmen a chance to delve into science, technology, engineering, and math and also gives them a chance to bond with classmates and teachers.

In the music class, students use iPads and special software to create their own music.

“This is part of the avenue of 21st-century music,” says teacher Carolyn Morrison, “A lot of music today is digital so we’re helping the kids use different digital platforms to create and record music.

“With one iPad and software kids can create an entire orchestration of a song, using dubstep sounds as well as classical instruments like pianos, guitars, violins — any type of instrument they can think of will be used to create music.”

Student Austin Maes says, “The way I got interested in music is through video games and the music on the games is usually funky and fresh and I kinda want to do music for stuff like that when I grow up.”

“Music wise, I try to keep it bouncy.”
