Man convicted of murdering 14-year-old over cell phone at Memorial park

A jury has found a man guilty of murdering a 14-year-old in Colorado Springs.

Riccardo Clinton Kirven was convicted of 1st-degree murder and other counts Thursday.

It comes after Kirven shot and killed 14-year-old Desmond Smith in July of 2015.

Kirven opened fire on Smith and two other teens at Memorial Park. It all stemmed from a dispute over a cell phone that belonged to Kirven’s nephew, Raymond Rogan, Jr.

Rogan thought Smith and his friends at the park stole his cell phone. Rogan and Kirven drove by the park and Kirven fired several shots at the teens. Smith was killed.

Rogan pleaded guilty in July 2016 to accessory to murder and attempted child abuse resulting in death.
