Landspouts, tornado touch down in Baca County

Three landspouts and one tornado touched down Sunday in Walsh, Baca County. The Warning Coordination Meteorologist from the National Weather Service in Pueblo assessed the damage Sunday evening.

Three landspouts formed southwest of Walsh, and one tornado occurred northwest of Walsh. A landspout is a funnel cloud that meets the ground; however, it doesn’t form from a thunderstorm. A tornado is a column of violently spinning air that spawns from a parent thunderstorm.

The tornado was an EF1 with winds estimated to have been around 100 mph. In a three-mile zone northwest of Walsh, straight-line winds caused downed power poles and damaged crop irrigation systems in a half mile stretch. Additionally, softball-sized hail was responsible for damage in Walsh.
