Pueblo chiles behind growing schedule

Mother Nature can wreak havoc on crops in southern Colorado, including the Pueblo chiles. Due to recent heavy rains, some Pueblo chiles are behind schedule on growing.

It’s an ongoing challenge this time of year: growing the Pueblo chiles. It’s an effort that doesn’t go unnoticed.

“What’s exciting about the Pueblo chiles is every one is just a little bit different when you eat it. One’s a little hotter, one’s a little milder, a little sweeter,” said Dalton Milberger with Milberger Farms.

Milberger grows both Pueblo and Anaheim chiles. He knows what it’s like to rely on southern Colorado’s unpredictable weather.

“It’s nice sometimes, and other times it’s a pain,” said Milberger. “It does help out, and other times it just kicks our butts.”

In the spring, overnight lows can be a concern.

“We usually get a light frost or freeze once or twice a year. This year, they came early and didn’t hurt us too bad,” commented Milberger.

Due to recent cold temperatures last month, some of the chiles have yellowish colors. However, it’s expected to become greener due to more sunshine.

Milberger says the growth of the chiles at Milberger Farms is one week behind schedule due to some cooler days. Even still, he says the chiles should get back on track with the incoming heat.

“80s and 90s is good for them,” added Milberger. “70s it’s getting almost too cold.”

Hail is also a big concern. It can wipe out entire fields of chiles. It’s just part of the gamble in the business. Even so, Milberger says it’s all worth it.

“It’s very rewarding, said Milberger. “Makes you feel good inside and proud of what you do.”

Chiles are expected to be harvested in late July and August.
