Woman killed in Douglas County lightning strike identified

The Douglas County Coroner’s Office has released the name of a woman who was killed by a lightning strike while horseback riding Sunday. She was Laura Miller, 36.

Miller’s horse also died in the strike.

A 15-year-old girl was seriously injured. The unidentified teen is a relative of Miller’s, according to KDVR.

Rescuers responded to the 7000 block of Rainbow Creek Road in Sedalia after receiving reports that two people had been struck by lightning. The call came in at 3:24 p.m.

The two were riding on a community bridle trail to meet Miller’s mother along the way. All involved were residents of the neighborhood and were experienced horseback riders.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind the public when you hear thunder or see lightning to go indoors. Never use trees or fences as shelter.
