One arrested after grass fire breaks out in Colorado Springs

One person was arrested after a grass fire broke out Sunday evening near I-25 and Highway 24.

Officers were called around 8:51 p.m. for a welfare check. The saw a flame coming from an unknown object held by a man. Officers spotted the grass on the west side of southbound I-25 just north of exit 139.

Officers used fire extinguishers to control the flames until firefighters arrived, police said. The fire had burned about 300 square feet by the time fire crews arrived.

A man, later identified as Michael Carruth, was arrested near the scene.

Carruth is facing charges of second-degree arson and setting fire to woods/prairies.
