The Denver Zoo is preparing to open a new exhibit featuring their Amur tigers.

The new exhibit, “The Edge,” is set to open to the public on March 18.

Officials with the zoo say they choose the name to illustrate just how close guests can get to the tigers, and to reflect the nature of the exhibit. The new habitat is nearly double the size of the current enclosure in the Felines Exhibit. It features large pools where the big cats can splash and play as well as massive pine trees more than one century old.

The majority of the exhibit was built by workers at the zoo and features an elevated loft for the tigers which will let them to roam 12 feet over the heads of visitors.

Shannon Block, president and CEO of the Denver Zoo, said “This exhibit is made to draw them in and let them experience these amazing animals like never before. We hope they leave awe-inspired, with a new appreciation for tigers.”

The new exhibit also features a multi-level seating area where guests can get different perspectives as they watch zookeepers’ daily demonstrations with the big cats.

The project cost about $2.2 million and was paid for with Better Denver Bond funds.

” ‘The Edge’ would not have been possible without the generous support of Denver voters and political leaders within the City and County of Denver. We are grateful to be able to financially team together to deliver a project that enhances the culture of this great city,” said Block.
