Celebrities use The Oscars to breakout their political opinions

Celebrities used the Oscars to break out their political opinions on Sunday night.

Host Jimmy Kimmel, not even a minute into being on stage, started the myriad of comments.

“This broadcast is being watched live by millions of Americans and around the world in more than 225 countries that now hate us,” Kimmel said.

Immigration and the travel ban was some of the most common topics mentioned throughout the awards.

Director of the foreign film “The Salesman”, Asghar Farhadi, said in a statement he didn’t attend because of the travel ban.

“My absence is out of respect for the people of my country and those of the other six nations who have been disrespected by the inhumane law that bands entry of immigrants to the U.S.,” Farhadi’s statement read.

President Trump’s wall was mentioned by presenter Gael Garcia Bernal.

“As a Mexican, as a Latin American, as a migrant worker, as a human being I’m against any form of wall that wants to separate us,” Bernal said.

Those watching in Colorado expressed mixed reactions.

“I guess yes because it’s very important with the election,” Constance Picart said.

“There’s no point in bringing up other people’s views, other subjects. It’s really not the right spot,” Chris Guntner said.

University of Colorado political professor, Josh Dunn said the comments from the celebrities likely don’t have a real effect on people.

“I suspect that in the end, these Hollywood speeches on politics don’t have a direct effect on people’s opinions except perhaps to galvanize support for the people they are speaking out against,” Dunn said.

Kimmel also tweeted at President Trump during the awards as Trump hadn’t posted anything on the social media site despite the multiple political comments.

As 10:36 p.m. MT, President Trump had not responded to any of the celebrities comments on his Twitter page.
